The Viability of Oil Extraction from Trinidad Tar Sands by Radio Frequency Heating: A Simulation Approach

Trinidad has tar sand resources of about 2 billion barrels of oil on land in the Parrylands/Guapo and Brighton areas. With an oil price of over USD 25 per barrel, the commercial extraction of oil from Trinidad tar sands is viable, but it requires a careful study. The relatively small extent of this tar sand (about 10,000 acres and with depths varying from surface to less than 500 feet) and with...

RF absorption and ion heating in helicon sources.

Experimental data are presented that are consistent with the hypothesis that anomalous rf absorption in helicon sources is due to electron scattering arising from parametrically driven ion-acoustic waves downstream from the antenna. Also presented are ion temperature measurements demonstrating anisotropic heating (T( perpendicular)>T(parallel)) at the edge of the discharge. The most likely expl...

Radiofrequency energy-induced heating during MR procedures: a review.

During an MR procedure, most of the transmitted RF power is transformed into heat within the patient's tissue as a result of resistive losses. Not surprisingly, the primary bioeffects associated with the RF radiation used for MR procedures are directly related to the thermogenic qualities of this electromagnetic field. This review article discusses the characteristics of RF energy-induced heati...

Reduction of electron heating in the low-frequency anomalous-skin-effect regime.

It is known that electron thermal motion in the anomalous-skin-effect regime of rf plasma discharges leads to enhancement of rf power absorption by plasma due to the resonant electron-wave interaction, which is a main mechanism of plasma heating in a typical inductively coupled plasma discharge. In this Letter we show, however, that the rf power absorption may be strongly reduced (compared to t...

Abnormal heating of low-energy electrons in low-pressure capacitively coupled discharges.

In low-pressure capacitively coupled plasmas, high-energy electrons are collisionlessly heated by large rf fields in the sheaths while low-energy electrons are confined in the bulk plasma by the ambipolar potential. Low-energy electrons are typically inefficiently heated due to their low collisionality and the weak rf electric field present in the bulk. It is shown, however, that as a result of...
